"Seabrook House really provided me with a foundation to
build myself up from and make myself well again."

Like so many who first walk through the doors of Seabrook House,
Dennis Bacon had no serious intention of getting well when he
entered our residential treatment program in 1977. In fact, he
didn’t know what getting well meant.
Today, Dennis, a successful 18-year veteran Construction Manager
of the South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA),
has 30 years of sobriety. Enjoying a bountiful life with his wife
of 18 years and two daughters (9 and 11) in Wilmington, DE, Dennis
is thankful for his experience at Seabrook House.
"If it were not for Seabrook House, I'd probably be dead or
in jail," said Dennis. "Seabrook House really provided me with
a foundation to build myself up from and make myself well again."
Dennis began drinking at the developmental age of twelve with
Wilmington area neighborhood boys. By the 10th grade he had dropped
out of high school and was frequently disappearing from home.
Finally, on Christmas Eve night in 1977, Dennis was arrested for
disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. He was a regular user
of alcohol and speed at age 17.
"I had to either go into a treatment program, or go to jail,"
said Dennis. So Dennis entered Seabrook House in 1977 as part
of a court mandated sentence. Although only interested in getting
back out on the streets, Dennis completed his stay, earning his
freedom to go back out in the world. More trouble from his addiction
was to follow and Dennis finally decided that this lifestyle was
getting him nowhere, and fast.
"I was fed up at this point and wanted to make an effort the
second time around," said Dennis. Not long after his stint in
residential treatment, Dennis came back to Seabrook House in 1978,
admitting himself into the outpatient program.
Now, Dennis is proud to say that he has been clean and sober
since 1978. Six years later, Dennis went on to earn his Bachelor
of Science in Geology from the University of Delaware. "Treatment
really works if you stick with it and keep things fresh in your
mind," said Bacon. "I’m living proof that it works.”
